The Role of National Flood Insurance Program in Social Protection

From both humanitarian and public policy perspectives, mitigating the socioeconomic consequences of natural disasters is critical to protect people from sliding into poverty. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) in the US is implemented to enforce floodplain management regulations and to provide insurance protection against flood damages. Using a recently published NFIP claims data set, this project estimates the extent to which NFIP protects insurees from poor, flood-prone counties.

WHERE DOES NEPAL STAND?

Visualizations of spatial and temporal variations in development can intuitively depict how Nepal has compared to the rest of the world. Past success stories of similar countries overcoming significant socioeconomic challenges can inspire Nepal today to realize its own development goals. To help discover these stories through numbers, this database presents an unbalanced panel of 189 countries for the 1950-2015 period, including over 1450 social, economic, financial and political indicators from an array of publicly available international sources.
UNDERSTANDING NEPAL THROUGH DATA

Simple illustrations of increasingly available household survey data can be a source of accessible and effective insight to collectively understand significant development challenges in one snapshot. Developing a data visualization ecosystem can enable information coordination by easing friction in data access, absorption and dissemination, better informing policy decision-making and action. Furthermore, visualizing stark inequalities in the most basic factors of socioeconomic wellbeing, particularly in less-developed countries like Nepal, can be thought provoking to any audience. With this as my motivation, I publish the following toolbox to facilitate the use of data analytics for development.

Please select socioeconomic indicator/s and zones from the dropdown menu on the left. Hover on map, bars or dots to see detail. Press Ctrl + Click on map to compare values with other districts and Ctrl + Z to revert changes.
